Project Overview — Brendale BESS (QLD)
The Brendale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, is a large-scale energy storage project designed to support the stability and reliability of the Queensland electricity grid. Connected directly to the South Pine substation, the system provides fast-response energy storage and grid support services within the National Electricity Market (NEM).
System Capacity & Function
With a capacity of 205MW / 410MWh, the Brendale BESS stores energy during periods of low demand and releases it when demand increases.
This enables the system to:
- Balance electricity supply across the network
- Support peak demand periods
- Reduce strain on generation and transmission assets
Grid Support & Renewable Integration
The project plays a key role in supporting renewable energy integration by storing excess solar and wind generation and dispatching it as required.
By doing so, the Brendale BESS helps stabilise the grid, improve responsiveness to fluctuations in supply and demand, and ensure a more consistent flow of electricity. It also provides important frequency control and ancillary services, which are critical in maintaining system performance and reducing price volatility for consumers.
Technology & Performance
Built using advanced battery technology with grid-forming capability, the system can respond rapidly to changes in network conditions.
This allows the project to:
- Provide fast-response support to the grid
- Enhance system reliability during fluctuations
- Support critical transmission infrastructure
Role in Australia’s Energy Transition
As part of a growing portfolio of utility-scale battery projects, Brendale contributes to Australia’s shift toward a more flexible, low-emissions energy system.
The project supports increased renewable energy uptake by enabling stored energy to be deployed when needed, helping to reduce reliance on traditional generation sources. Through improved grid stability and energy storage capability, Brendale plays a key role in supporting a modern, resilient electricity network that can adapt to Australia’s evolving energy mix.
Amplex is proud to have supported another project in contribution to Australia’s fast-tracking progress toward the energy transition, securing the nations energy future and powering more homes across the country.
